Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on social media platform X this Tuesday that he held a “productive” meeting with Changpeng Zhao (CZ), founder of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, to discuss Malaysia’s potential as a major hub for the digital asset and blockchain industry.
Anwar emphasized the importance of government leadership and cross-sector collaboration in driving the development of the blockchain sector. He expressed his intention to continue engaging with agencies such as the Securities Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia, and the Ministry of Digital to "jointly explore how to promote and encourage responsible innovation."
Anwar wrote:
“Government leadership is clearly crucial to accelerating the adoption of blockchain—whether through digitalization or exploring tokenization of financial instruments and other use cases. By taking the right steps, Malaysia can position itself at the forefront of this global digital transformation.”
His remarks suggest that Malaysia is considering forward-looking regulatory policies and frameworks to support tokenization and related financial innovation. As early as January this year, Anwar had already held discussions with the Abu Dhabi government and CZ on policies related to cryptocurrencies, digital transformation, and AI.
CZ reshared Anwar’s post on X today, stating that he had “great discussions in Malaysia.”
CZ has recently been meeting with various governments to promote blockchain applications and provide policy advisory on digital assets. In addition to Malaysia, CZ signed an MoU with the Kyrgyz government earlier this month to assist in developing crypto-related policies and technical support. He also joined Pakistan’s Crypto Council as a strategic advisor, helping to advance crypto infrastructure, education, and adoption efforts in the country.
